OBAMA AND FBI LOOK TO “TAP” INTO YOUR FACEBOOK, SKYPE, GOOGLE AND OTHER ONLINE CHATS
How would you feel knowing some guy in an FBI office may be watching your private chats in real time? As creepy and tyrannical is it may sound, it very well may soon be reality.
The Obama administration, resolving years of internal debate, is on the verge of backing a Federal Bureau of Investigation plan for a sweeping overhaul of surveillance laws that would make it easier to wiretap people who communicate using the Internet rather than by traditional phone services, according to officials familiar with the deliberations.
Of course, the FBI claims it wouldn’t sneak into a chat without a court order, but as we found in the Patriot Act, government agencies always find ways around that. More importantly though, is the fact that most companies do not currently have “tappable” chat networks. What this move would do is force companies to make their communications mechanisms tappable for government. Once government has the capability, you can almost guarantee they will abuse it.
